The Boat Life I Never Planned

Episode 2 — Two Years of Almost Nothing

Before our family started living on the water,
there were two years that felt almost impossible.

My husband had started building the boat.

But building a boat doesn’t bring money in.

And working full time meant
the boat would never be finished.

So we were stuck in a strange place.

If he worked,
there was no time to build the boat.

If he didn’t work,
there was no money to buy materials.

Either way, the project looked impossible.

During those two years,
we had almost nothing.

Some weeks our bank card didn’t work at the supermarket.

I remember standing there,
hoping the machine would accept the card.

Sometimes it did.

Sometimes it didn’t.

Five dollars for a playgroup felt expensive.

I remember once not going
because I didn’t have the five dollars.

Birthday parties were even harder.

Our kids were invited,
but buying a present wasn’t always possible.

Once I pretended my child was sick
just so we didn’t have to go.

Those moments stay with you.

At the same time,
my husband kept building the boat.

Piece by piece.

Fiberglass.

Wood.

Engines.

Slowly, the shape of the catamaran
started appearing in that dusty workshop.

Looking back now,
I still don’t know how we survived those years.

We had two young kids.

Very little money.

And a man who refused to give up
on building a boat.

Most people would have stopped.

But somehow,
the boat kept getting bigger.
