Most people think WiFi is the internet.
It’s not.
WiFi is just the signal.
👉 It’s not about WiFi.
It’s about the network you rely on.

Our Setup (Family of 4, Full-Time Boat Life)
We don’t have a “boat internet system.”
We use mobile data.
- 4 people
- Multiple devices
- Work, streaming, school
👉 Everything runs through mobile networks.
Why Boat Life Forces You to Pay Attention
On land, most people never need to think about their internet setup.
They have unlimited home internet, so they don’t even know how much data they use.
But boat life is different.
When your internet depends on mobile data, you need to understand your usage.
Not perfectly.
But enough to make good decisions.
How Much Data Do You Actually Need?
This is where most people get it wrong.
They underestimate.
But the bigger issue is this:
Most people living on land do not even know how much data they use.
For our family of 4, 600GB per month is more than enough.
We don’t do anything extreme.
- No auto-play videos running all day
- No unnecessary background usage
Just normal use:
- I write blog posts, do research, and create digital products
- My partner uses Facebook and YouTube
- The kids use it for schoolwork and some videos
On weekdays, we mostly use the internet in the evening for around two hours after 6pm.
On weekends, usage is higher and spread across different times of the day.
👉 The problem is not usage.
👉 The problem is underestimating your needs.
The Reality: Unlimited Is Not Really Unlimited
Many plans say “unlimited.”
But in reality:
- Speed caps
- Network priority
- Congestion
👉 Especially on the water
Your signal depends on:
- Distance from land
- Network coverage
- Weather (sometimes)
Unlimited Plans Still Need Careful Thinking
Yes, unlimited plans exist.
But that does not mean the decision is simple.
You still need to consider:
- Price
- Connection quality
- Coverage
- Real-world reliability
👉 On a boat, these matter more than the word “unlimited.”
A cheap plan is useless if the connection drops when you actually need it.
Connection Depends on Location (Real Example)
One thing people often underestimate is location.
Not all areas have the same connection — especially on the water.
From our experience:
- Broadwater (Gold Coast) → Stable connection (Vodafone works well)
- Jumpinpin → Almost no connection
- Moreton Bay → Can be unreliable depending on where you are
👉 The difference is huge.
What Happens Offshore
Once you move offshore, mobile internet basically stops working.
👉 Your internet doesn’t fail randomly.
👉 It fails when you leave land.
Fixed vs Nomadic Setup
If you stay in one location, mobile data is usually enough.
That’s what we do.
But if you move around a lot, especially offshore, the setup changes.
Most nomadic boaters use:
- Starlink (satellite internet)
- Or high-gain antennas
In reality, Starlink is becoming the standard.
Because once you move offshore, mobile networks stop working.
What Actually Works (Australia)
From real use:
- Vodafone network works well near cities
- Speeds drop further offshore
- Hotspot from phones = main setup
👉 No fancy system needed
Our Real Experience in the Broadwater
From our experience, the Vodafone connection has been reliable in the Broadwater on the Gold Coast.
That doesn’t mean it will be the same everywhere.
But for where we are now, it works well enough for everyday life.
👉 And that matters more than marketing.
Real Cost (Monthly)
Example setup:
- Unlimited plan: ~$40/month per person
- Family of 4: ~$160/month
You can go cheaper.
But stability matters more than saving $10.
Biggest Mistakes People Make
❌ Thinking marina WiFi is enough
❌ Choosing the cheapest plan
❌ Not planning data usage
👉 Result: no internet when you actually need it
The Truth About Boat Internet
There is no perfect setup.
Only trade-offs.
👉 Cost vs speed
👉 Convenience vs reliability
But this is enough:
- Mobile data
- Good coverage
- Realistic expectations
Final Thought
Boat life doesn’t mean disconnecting.
It means designing your system properly.
👉 Internet is not the problem
👉 Bad assumptions are
If you’ve tried different setups or had connection issues, drop your experience — that’s how we all learn.
