I Thought Bitcoin Was Just Suspicious Internet Money
To be honest,
until recently, this was my opinion about Bitcoin:
“Suspicious internet money.”
That’s it.
When I saw news like:
“Bitcoin price explodes again!”
my reaction was usually:
“Okay… cool?”
Or when it crashed:
“Yeah. That looks dangerous.”
one of my friends bought Bitcoin.
Later, I heard she made a huge amount of money.
But at the time, my reaction was:
“What even is that?”
I truly did not understand it at all.
“Digital money.”
“Crypto.”
“Virtual currency.”
Everything sounded vague and suspicious to me.
And honestly, back then,
crypto felt full of scams and chaos.
So I ignored the whole thing.
Then about 5 or 6 years ago,
I also saw someone go all-in on crypto and completely collapse financially.
That made crypto feel even more dangerous to me.
So for many years,
I believed Bitcoin was:
- risky
- weird
- confusing
- not for people like me
But recently, something changed.
I found out that in Australia,
you can even buy Bitcoin through ETFs now.
That surprised me.
Because in my mind, Bitcoin still belonged to:
- strange websites
- hacker stories
- tech people
- internet chaos
But now it is entering normal investment systems.
That made me pause for a moment.
I still don’t fully understand it.
Not even close.
But recently I started thinking:
“Maybe this is not just about money.”
Maybe this is about:
- technology
- trust
- governments
- the future
- human behaviour
All mixed together.
I am not trying to become rich from crypto.
And I am definitely not planning to gamble my life savings.
Actually, I still think:
“Dreamy… but kind of dirty.”
But my children will probably grow up in a world where digital currencies are normal.
And maybe one day I just want to say:
“Your mum tried touching Bitcoin once.”
That’s all.
So this series is not written by an expert.
It is written by a middle-aged woman whose brain is still buffering most of this.
But maybe that’s exactly why I should write it.
Next episode:
I learned that “Bitcoin mining” is not actually digging something out of the ground.
That shocked me.
